Welcome to the Separation Science Thematic Group
The Separation Science Thematic Group brings together members of the Società Chimica Italiana (Italian Chemical Society) who are engaged in research and/or technical and scientific activities in the field of Separation Science. Its members are researchers and practitioners working with separation techniques, primarily chromatography and electrophoresis, and their coupling with mass spectrometry and other instrumental techniques for molecular identification and characterization. These techniques are of fundamental importance across numerous scientific fields, in both academia and industry.
The Group promotes initiatives aimed at fostering meetings and discussions among its members and the national scientific community, encouraging the exchange of technical and scientific expertise and strengthening collaboration between research groups. It also provides early-career researchers working in Separation Science with opportunities to present and discuss the results of their research and/or technical and scientific applications at dedicated conferences and seminars.
One of the Group's longest-standing initiatives is the organization of short scientific conferences known as “Incontri di Scienza delle Separazioni” (Separation Science Meetings). These events provide a forum for discussing the state of the art and the latest innovations in separation techniques, addressing emerging challenges in research, industrial production, and analytical quality control.
The scientific programme of the Incontri di Scienza delle Separazioni, generally held over two days, consists of short oral scientific presentations, primarily delivered by early-career researchers from universities, public and private research institutions, and industry. Their participation is encouraged through affordable registration fees and participation grants for early-career researchers without permanent positions, including research fellows, grant holders, and PhD students who are registered members of the Separation Science Thematic Group.
Since 2017, the Thematic Group has presented two prestigious awards annually during the Incontri di Scienza delle Separazioni.
“Giovanni Dugo” Medal
Named in honour of Professor Giovanni Dugo, this medal is awarded to a researcher who has demonstrated outstanding aptitude and interest in Separation Science research, particularly in applications related to Food Chemistry.
The award is reserved for graduates of Italian universities who are registered members of the Società Chimica Italiana and the Separation Science Interdivisional Group. Candidates must be nominated by at least ten members of the Thematic Group.
“Gruppo Interdivisionale di Scienza delle Separazioni – Premio Giovane Ricercatore” Medal (Young Researcher Award)
This medal is awarded to an early-career researcher who has demonstrated outstanding aptitude and interest in studies and research activities in the field of Separation Science.
The award is reserved for graduates of Italian universities who are under the age of 35 as of the application deadline and are registered members of both the Società Chimica Italiana and the Separation Science Thematic Group.

Premi e medaglie
