The medals awarded by the Italian Chemical Society (Società Chimica Italiana) are honors designed to recognize significant contributions to the advancement of chemistry in Italy. Granted to researchers, educators, or research groups, they celebrate achievements of particular distinction in scientific research, education, or the promotion of chemical culture.
Each medal serves a specific purpose, relating to different areas of the discipline or the profile of the recipients. Together, these awards map the multiple ways in which chemistry contributes to the development of knowledge, innovation, and societal progress.
The previous Regulations for the awarding of Italian Chemical Society Medals were approved by the Council on March 5, 2015. Subsequently, by resolution of March 16, 2021, the Council established that the Amedeo Avogadro Medal would be jointly awarded by the National Academy of Sciences, SCI, and CNR on a triennial basis.
The Council then established the Maria Bakunin Medal on March 13, 2025. Therefore, the new Regulations for the awarding of Italian Chemical Society Medals, along with their respective citations as outlined below, have been in effect since 2025 and are provided at the bottom of the page together with the 2025 Medal Call.
The Stanislao Cannizzaro Medal, among the most prestigious honors of the Italian Chemical Society, is awarded to scholars who have made original contributions to the advancement of fundamental chemistry. The award recognizes excellence in theoretical and experimental research, with emphasis on the international significance of the scientific trajectory. Like the Giulio Natta Medal, it represents a tribute to the ability to expand the frontiers of chemical knowledge.
The Giulio Natta Medal of the Italian Chemical Society honors innovation and impact in applied research across all fields of chemistry. Like the Stanislao Cannizzaro Medal, it recognizes distinguished scientific careers capable of generating value and transformation through research.
The Maria Bakunin Medal is awarded to a woman scientist who has outlined innovative perspectives and pathways for the development of the Chemical Sciences.
The Ivano Bertini Medal is awarded to a researcher under 40 years of age at the application deadline, in recognition of particularly significant and innovative contributions in any field of the Chemical Sciences.
The Gabriello Illuminati Medal is awarded to a scientist in recognition of contributions to the development of the chemical sciences with particular emphasis on educational aspects.
The Domenico Marotta Medal is awarded to an individual who has distinguished themselves in organizing activities in the field of chemistry and in promoting chemical culture.
The Emanuele Paternò Medal is awarded to a scientist in recognition of contributions to the development of Italian chemical science and technology.
The Raffaele Piria Medal is awarded to a scientist who has honored Italian Organic Chemistry and represents a continuation of its most distinguished traditions.
The Cesare Pisani Medal is awarded to a scientist in recognition of contributions to the development of the chemical sciences with particular emphasis on theoretical and computational modeling.
The Enzo Tiezzi Medal is awarded to a scientist in recognition of contributions to the development of environmental chemical sciences.
The Amedeo Avogadro Medal is awarded triennially to an Italian or foreign scholar who has achieved results of outstanding significance in the Chemical Sciences and their applications. It is jointly awarded by SCI, CNR-DSCTM, and the Accademia dei XL on the occasion of the Avogadro Colloquia.
