The history of SCI

Over a Century of Science

The Italian Chemical Society traces its origins back to the late 19th century, a period marked by intense cultural and industrial development.

Founded with the aim of bringing together Italian chemists within a body able to represent, promote, and advance the chemical sciences in Italy, SCI has lived through more than a century of historical change, institutional transformation, and scientific growth. Its history is a collective narrative of insights, collaboration, and forward-looking choices that have helped establish chemistry as a cornerstone of contemporary society, in constant dialogue with research, industry, education, and public institutions.

This page highlights the main stages in SCI’s evolution, showcasing key milestones and offering a window onto the historical legacy of the Italian scientific community.
