The University of Palermo’s chemistry collection is displayed across several rooms, with laboratory benches and exhibition cases showcasing instruments linked to the city’s scientific history. The pieces reflect the wide-ranging research themes pursued here, particularly after the creation of the Institutes of Organic Chemistry (1951) and Physical Chemistry (1961).
The roots of the collection date back to Stanislao Cannizzaro, who, upon becoming Professor of Organic and Inorganic Chemistry in 1861, worked to establish a modern laboratory in Palermo—not just for his own research, but also for student training.
