Museum of Chemistry, University of Genoa

The Chemistry Museum of the University of Genoa is located on Viale Benedetto XV, inside the former Institute of General Chemistry, which now houses the School of Science headquarters.

The museum is set up inside a fully preserved early 20th-century laboratory, giving it a unique and authentic atmosphere.

Its collection includes about 650 scientific instruments, ranging from 19th-century chemistry equipment used in research and teaching, to more sophisticated devices from later decades. A highlight is an original analytical balance from the time of Stanislao Cannizzaro, who, between 1855 and 1861, modernized chemistry studies in Genoa and equipped the laboratories with cutting-edge tools.

Together, these objects trace the evolution of chemical sciences over two centuries—from alchemical vessels and furnaces, to Kipp’s gas generators, balances, and large-scale apparatus for the extraction and study of rare metals like lanthanum and cerium.

Due to structural safety issues, the museum is unfortunately no longer open to the public.
